The Birth of Graveless Records

Graveless Records was founded on a simple idea: powerful music should not be limited by traditional industry gatekeepers. For decades, record labels controlled distribution, production budgets, and access to audiences. Technology has steadily broken those walls down, and AI is the next step in that evolution.

Our label focuses on aggressive, uncompromising music with theological depth—music that explores themes of resurrection, judgment, redemption, and spiritual warfare. The name itself reflects that vision: Graveless, which also fits with our Undead theme. The grave has no final claim.

Through Graveless Records, projects like Neither Dead nor Dying can exist outside the traditional mold while still delivering music with the same intensity and craftsmanship as any modern metal release.

Neither Dead nor Dying: Metal From the Edge of Life and Death

The AI band Neither Dead nor Dying was born from a concept rooted deeply in Christian theology.

The phrase captures the paradox of the believer’s state. Scripture teaches that those in Christ have died to the old life, yet they have not fully entered the resurrected glory to come. We exist in a strange tension—crucified with Christ, yet still walking the earth.

Neither dead.

Nor dying.

But awaiting resurrection.

That tension translates perfectly into the atmosphere of extreme metal. The music of Neither Dead nor Dying blends death metal (or Un-death metal) aggression, and thrash metal velocity into a sound that feels both ancient and futuristic.

And AI plays a major role in making that sound possible.

How We Actually Make the Music

One of the biggest misconceptions about AI music is that a computer simply generates a full song out of thin air. Yes, some software you literally can just click a button, but it's garbage. That is not how our music is made.

Our process starts exactly where metal has always started: the riff.

We write and record real guitar riffs—heavy, fast, aggressive. (Our founder can shred). These riffs form the skeleton of every song. Once we have the riffs recorded, we begin arranging them into a full song structure: verses, breakdowns, bridges, transitions, and climaxes.

This is still a human-driven process.

We decide how the riffs flow together. We build the tension. We shape the pacing. We wordsmith our lyrics with poetry and vivid imagery. In other words, the song is made the same way metal songs have always been made.

But once the foundation is built, we unleash AI into the process.

The AI analyzes the riffs, the tempo, the rhythm patterns, and the atmosphere of the track. It then generates complementary instrumentation—drums, bass lines, additional layers, textures, and sometimes orchestral or ambient elements that would normally require an entire production team.

Instead of replacing the musician, AI becomes something like an extremely fast collaborator.

It expands the possibilities.

It allows us to experiment with arrangements that would normally take weeks to test. Sometimes it surprises us! Most of the time though it's a battle to get it to produce the sounds we want.

And it allows a small creative team to produce music with the scope of a much larger studio project.

Training the Voices

Vocals are one of the most fascinating aspects of AI-assisted music production- and it's getting incredibly realistic.

For Neither Dead nor Dying, we experiment with training vocal models. This means feeding AI examples of vocal styles—growls, screams, chants, spoken passages—until it learns how to reproduce those sounds in new performances. We run a generation, again and again, over and over, currently over 30,000 times at the time of this writing! We have created unique voices that if not identified as AI, may never be identifed.

Instead of one static voice, we can create multiple vocal identities:

These voices can then be directed just like a vocalist in the studio.

The result is not random noise—it is a controlled performance shaped by human songwriting and lyrical intent.

The lyrics themselves remain human-written. The message matters too much to leave to chance.
